What problems with heart or blood vessels can cause a fall in blood pressure?

If the pumping function of left ventricle is reduced grossly, it can cause fall in blood pressure. This can occur following a massive heart attack and sometimes in severe inflammation of the heart known as fulminant myocarditis. Failure of right ventricle as in massive right ventricular infarction also causes hypotension. If major pulmonary arteries are blocked with clots in pulmonary embolism, it leads to hypotension. Undue dilatation of blood vessels can also cause hypotension, as in late stages of sepsis. Leaks from blood vessels due to tear or rupture can also rapidly cause fall in blood pressure due to blood loss.
