High sodium diet can worsen hypertension, which can lead to heart failure. Hypertension is an important risk factor for heart attack as well. High sodium diet can cause fluid retention and worsening of pre-existing heart failure since extra salt also causes fluid retention. The time required for this effect is variable and depends on how well the kidney is able to excrete the extra salt load as well as the individual’s sensitivity to a sodium load. If there is co-existing renal disease, the effect of a salt load is accentuated. Most of the packed food items have a higher salt content than conventional food items. There is no need to say that pickles have a high salt content.
