What is the difference between treatment of ST elevation myocardial infarction and non ST elevation myocardial infarction?

STEMI stands for ST elevation myocardial infarction and is often due to a fresh clot in a major coronary artery producing total occlusion. NSTEMI stand for non ST elevation myocardial infarction and it is often due to a platelet plug producing incomplete obstruction of a coronary artery. STEMI can be treated by clot dissolving agents known as thrombolytic therapy while this treatment is not used for NSTEMI.

Removing the clot initially by angioplasty known as primary angioplasty is the treatment of choice for STEMI which is detected and reaches hospital with the facility early. Angioplasty is also suitable for NSTEMI if there is a significant coronary obstruction. Both STEMI and NSTEMI need medications to prevent formation of fresh clots and fat deposition within the arteries.
