What is respiratory sinus arrhythmia?

Heart rate increases when you breathe in and decreases when you breathe out. This change in heart rate with breathing is known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia. It can be accurately identified while monitoring the ECG. The output of left ventricle is lower in inspiration. This triggers a compensatory increase in heart rate. The reverse occurs in expiration. Sinus arrhythmia means a change in the signal rate of the sinus node, the natural pacemaker of the heart.
