It depends on whether the clot is in the artery or the vein. If it is in the artery, it produces pain, pallor, lower temperature, loss of sensation and power of movement (paralysis). If the arterial occlusion persists for a long period, the limb will become gangrenous. If clot is in the vein, it produces pain, swelling and a bluish red colour, due to venous obstruction. Clots in the veins can migrate to the lungs and produce pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal condition if it is massive.
