Suprasternal View in Echocardiography

Suprasternal view in echocardiography is most often used to assess the arch of the aorta. The asceding aorta, arch and proximal descending aorta are seen in this view. While evaluating congenital heart disease, this view is routinely taken to exclude coarctation of aorta. Proximal dissection of arto can also be well visualised in this view. Branching of the pulmonary artery and patent ductus arteriosus are also seen well in this view. In Doppler studies, the gradient across a stenotic aortic valve can be evaluated best from this view as interference by a co-existant mitral regurgitation jet is unlikely.
