Subcostal view in echocardiography is widely used in the evaluation of congenital heart disease. It is a good view to see the inter atrial septum as false echo dropouts as in apical four chamber view are unlikely. This is because the echo beam passes perpendicular to the interatrial septum. As a rule, imaging is better if the structure of interest lies perpendicular to the beam. In case of Doppler studies, it is the other way round, best Doppler signals are obtained if the flow is parallel to the beam.
