Does open heart surgery affect memory?

Cognitive dysfunction (loss of intellectual functions such as thinking, memory, and reasoning) has been reported to occur following open heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. This is possibly because of the non-pulsatile flow and lower blood pressures during cardiopulmonary bypass (using heart lung machine), which may cause cerebral hypoperfusion (low blood flow to the brain). Theoretically off pump beating heart surgery should not have this problem, though it may have other technical issues.
