Can a floppy atrial septum cause stroke?

Floppy atrial septum (wall separating two upper chambers of the heart) is an aneurysm or bulge in the atrial septum which moves to and fro. It can cause embolic stroke (blockage of blood vessel of brain due to a blood clot carried there by blood circulation) rarely, especially if it is associated with a patent foramen ovale (an opening in the middle of the atrial septum, which normally closes off after birth). Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a cause for paradoxical embolism (blood clot from the right side of the heart reaching blood vessels supplied by the left side of the heart). There are PFO closure devices which are sometimes used to prevent recurrent strokes due to paradoxical embolism.
